Essential Tools for Cleaning Grain Stores in the UK

Effective grain storage is crucial for maintaining the quality and safety of grains, preventing pest infestations, mould growth, and other issues that can compromise the stored produce. Proper cleaning of grain stores is a critical part of this process, and having the right tools for cleaning is essential.

Here, we look at the essential tools needed for cleaning a grain store.

Vacuum Cleaners
Industrial vacuum cleaners are indispensable for removing dust, grain residues, and other debris from storage areas. These machines are designed to handle large volumes of dust and fine particles that can accumulate in storage facilities. For grain stores, it’s important to use vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters to ensure that fine dust particles, which can affect air quality and lead to respiratory issues, are effectively captured.

Sweepers
Manual and mechanical sweepers are useful for cleaning floors and accessible surfaces. They help in gathering loose grains and debris that can attract pests. Mechanical sweepers, especially those designed for industrial use, can cover large areas quickly and efficiently, making them ideal for sizable grain storage facilities.

Pressure Washers
Pressure washers are essential for deep cleaning walls, floors, and equipment in grain stores. They are effective in removing stubborn dirt, mould, and insect residues. Hot water pressure washers, in particular, can sanitise surfaces by killing bacteria and other pathogens, thus helping to maintain a hygienic environment.

Brushes and Brooms
Heavy-duty brushes and brooms are necessary for areas that are difficult to reach with larger machines. Long-handled brushes can reach into corners and tight spaces, ensuring no area is left uncleaned. Stiff-bristled brooms are effective for sweeping up larger debris and grain residues.

Disinfectants and Sanitisers
Chemical disinfectants and sanitisers are crucial for eliminating bacteria, mould, and other pathogens that can spoil grains. To ensure effectiveness and safety, it is important to choose products that are safe for use in food storage areas and follow proper application guidelines.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Cleaning grain stores can expose workers to dust, mould spores, and chemicals. PPE such as dust masks, gloves, and safety goggles are necessary to protect workers’ health. Additional protective gear, such as respirators or protective clothing, may be required depending on the chemicals used.

Inspection Tools
Tools such as flashlights, mirrors, and magnifying glasses are helpful for inspecting grain stores’ cleanliness. Regular inspections ensure that all areas are properly cleaned and help identify potential issues, such as pest infestations or structural problems, early on.

Moisture Meters
Moisture control is vital in preventing mould growth and spoilage. Moisture meters help monitor the humidity levels in grain stores, ensuring that conditions remain optimal for grain preservation. Regular monitoring allows for timely adjustments to ventilation and other environmental controls.

Rodent and Insect Control Equipment
Traps, bait stations, and insecticide sprays are necessary for controlling pests. Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies often involve using these tools to prevent infestations and maintain the integrity of stored grains. Regular maintenance and monitoring of these controls are essential.

We offer two insecticides: the Phobi Smoke Pro 90C+ and K-Obiol EC25. The new Phobi Smoke ProC is a highly effective acaricide / insecticide for empty grain stores. It has 100% efficacy in the control of grain beetles, grain weevils and grain mites. All you need to do is light the wick and place it in the empty grain store. The smoke will reach into all the nooks and crannies where insects hide.

K-Obiol EC25 is an emulsifiable concentrate containing 25g/L of deltamethrin synergised with 225g/L of piperonyl butoxide. It is used to control all stored product insects known to infest grain and pulses.

Storage Bins and Containers
Clean, airtight storage bins and containers help organise and protect cleaned grains. These containers prevent contamination and pest access, ensuring the cleaned grain remains in good condition until needed.

Maintaining cleanliness in grain stores requires a variety of tools and equipment. Thankfully, we have all of the items you need in stock or readily available for quick delivery.
